More about the UC Irvine Ecological Preserve
The UCI Ecological Preserve may be the smallest open space in the Nature Reserve of Orange County, but its biodiversity is just as robust as some of NROC’s biggest parks. That’s what makes this unique piece of land so special, and its affiliation with an institute of higher learning means it’s been the site of numerous research projects and PhD theses. Coastal sage scrub is the prevailing habitat, and you’ll find lots of prickly pear cactus, so keep your eyes peeled for the cactus wrens who love to nest in them.
It’s also host to a number of different microhabitats, and if you visit in the spring, you can set your sights on some unique wildflower blooms. The sweeping panoramic views, however, are stunning year-round. The open space is situated between the San Joaquin Corridor and the UCI campus, which inspires extra appreciation for this expanse of nature in the midst of modern urban life. Especially since it acts as a key piece of habitat along the Bonita Canyon Corridor, which allows wildlife—including coyotes and gnatcatchers—to move between the Preserve, Newport Beach’s back bay, and Laguna.
