The Reserve has a ton of equestrian-friendly trails that have riders champing at the bit to explore these open spaces.

Nothing immerses you in the NROC’s wilderness like experiencing its natural beauty from the back of a horse.

Here, equestrians can trot beneath the shade of a woodland canopy, canter along ridgelines with an ocean view, or wind through wide open spaces surrounded by nothing but spectacular scenery.

There are plenty of options for both coastal rides and inland adventures, with trails that range from easy to strenuous. Crystal Cove State Park and Irvine Regional Park offer gentle loops and longer excursions, while more intrepid equestrians can head to Laguna Coast Wilderness Park. With several trails accessible from the Big Bend staging area, riders can enjoy wildflower-lined canyons, challenging elevation gains, and panoramic views. Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park is another favorite—especially the easy loop that leads you to views of Red Rock Canyon.

: Yes, there are a number of trails throughout the Nature Reserve of Orange County that are equestrian-friendly, with trailheads that have appropriate parking resources. Check out these lots, which all accommodate horse trailers: Quail Hill Loop Trail in Irvine, Glenn Ranch Parking Lot at Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park, Big Bend Staging Area at Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, and the Train Station Parking Lot at Irvine Regional Park.
: Visitor safety is a priority, and we hope all bicyclists and equestrians who enjoy the Reserve feel the same. As all trail riders know, there are inherent risks when exploring the land on a bike or horse. The use of helmets is not typically enforced in the Reserve, but wearing them is recommended for all riders.
: Horses always have the right of way. Hikers, mountain bikers, trail runners, and any other trail users should yield to horses when exploring the Reserve. This keeps the trails safe and efficient for all NROC visitors.
: Trail closures can happen at any time, for many reasons, but they often happen when weather conditions—like fire risk or rain—make trails unsafe.
